Help preserve parks while changing lives by supporting the Student Conservation Association!
Many of my friends may know that in the summer of 1973 I had the privilege of working as a volunteer with the Student Conservation Association. My experience in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was life changing. For one month I lived in a tents with a group of other volunteers and did stream surveys for juvenile trout, disassembled a weather station atop a mountain and cleaned shelters along the Appalachian Trail. I had a blast. Of course the subsequent decades saw me pursuing much more mundane, predictable activities including college, medical school, residency and a career as an ophthalmologist. But my experience with the SCA stayed with me. It’s a fabulous experience for High school and college age students.
I think it’s important to share this opportunity with others. For many years I have donated to the SCA. The organization and the opportunities they offer have grown. They are careful stewards of their funds.
SCA's annual Giving Day is coming up on September 22, 2020. This year their goal is to raise $40,000 from 300 donors from all 50 states. If they accomplish that they will unlock over $25,000 in matching funds. Wow!
SCA Giving Day is a 24-hour online fundraising event where alumni, their parents, staff, donors, family, and friends come together to support the organization’s mission of developing the next generation of conservation leaders.
Your gift of any size will go toward their $40,000 goal, support conservation projects on public lands, in your neighborhood and beyond! I'd like to see this organization get more recognition and continue to be able to provide life-changing opportunities to young people. I hope you'll join me.
Please donate today to help SCA continue to develop the next generation of conservation leaders who will protect our parks and public lands now and into the future. Thank you for helping me spread the word and further the mission!
